Few people noticed or cared about that one, even though it at least had a back seat and an additional pair of doors.

The way the power is given via the continuously variable transmission (CVT) is worse than the weak-kneed power. As the rpm rise, hold, and then fall, the engine makes more groaning noises than a zombie film, and there’s a noticeable rubber-band sensation throughout. Because a large portion of the battery’s regeneration comes from kinetic energy absorbed through the braking system, hybrids have historically featured extremely grabby brakes. Furthermore, handling is deft, especially for a car that puts economy first. The Continental tires that come with it offer great grip without yelling in disdain at the first provocation on a bend, which is frequently the case with low-rolling-resistance tires, but having less steering feel and a less tight suspension than a performance sedan.

The Touring version, which has a nicer interior and some chrome highlights, was our Insight tester. Along with the sunroof and heated front and back leather seats, Honda also includes a 452-watt audio system and standard satellite navigation. The 10-speaker setup has passable sound quality, although it sounds hollower than some of the competition’ systems. Engine and Performance
Even minivans these days are exceeding the 300 horsepower mark, so a sedan with just 107 horsepower is more whisper than wallop. Even with the battery-operated hybrid punch, the total output is only 151 horsepower.
The Insight seems like it’s trying to push itself through molasses when driving on a daily basis, although the torque number helps things with 197 lb-ft from zero to 3,000 rpm. A surprisingly swift jump from a stop is possible when the sport mode is engaged and the accelerator pedal is lightly stomped, but the maximum torque is short-lived and the passing power is insignificant at high speeds. The EV indicator on the dash indicates whether the Insight is coasting, cruising, or crawling along on battery power alone. The 40-L gasoline tank is one advantage of the hybrid system’s functioning; it provides a fair range, especially if the majority of the driving is done in metropolitan areas. It’s important to note that the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid and Toyota Prius, the Insight’s two main rivals, both outperform the Honda in terms of efficiency, with average numbers that are higher overall.

All Insights are equipped with Honda’s superb active safety package, which includes automatic high beam management, adaptive cruise control with autonomous braking, lane-keeping assistance, and active road-departure and collision avoidance systems. The automated cruise control did seem a bit too cautious to us; it took a while to determine that it was safe to speed when the lane was free in front of us. At $32,490 for the highest Touring model, the Insight is somewhat less expensive than its main rivals. The standard model, which starts at $28,490, is an even better deal because there are no add-on possibilities. To give you an idea, the Insight costs around $3,000 more than a Civic sedan with similar equipment and has a total fuel efficiency of about 2.2 L/100 better. At current gas rates, the Insight buyer would have to travel 20,000 km annually for up to six years to break even. The hybrid technology in the Insight would pay for itself sooner for drivers who often stop and go or commute longer distances.
The Honda Insight is an easy car to live with, requiring little compromise and investment compared to a compact car with comparable technology. However, although being somewhat more costly than its competitors, it offers less functionality and efficiency, which puts the Insight back into the category of similarly priced products hybrid category.
